Montreal Comic Con 2015: I’m an Artist!

The Banner!

I experienced something great this past weekend: my very first time as an exhibitor in Artist Alley. Last year I helped out Syn Studio Art School with their booth, so I had a mild idea of what to expect… but selling one’s own wares, seeing people’s reactions, and meeting like-minded artists truly is a life event, an artistic milestone if you will. And I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

I had started planning for the convention way back in August during a long ride back from Toronto’s Fan Expo 2014, based on a friend’s suggestion. I applied as soon as I could, and, thinking I would have a year to prep, sat back and took it easy… until I found out they had switched the dates to early July. At the very least I had some illustrations ready, but there was so much I wanted to do that from then on I focused most of my attention on Comic Con (and early wedding preparations!). Coasters, ‘adoptable’ Orr Kid figurines, specific illustrations I hadn’t got to yet… I widdled my ideas down to those. In the end, what I had to show made for a happily successful table.

One thing I’m extremely grateful to have brought with me: a portfolio of extra work. It earned me several extra print orders, and without it I don’t think I would have had half the interest in commissions that I did. The stars of the show, however, were without a doubt my miniMOO business cards! By the end of the first day I barely had any left of my 200 (something I’ll keep in mind for next time), and was up at midnight printing out flimsy ‘emergency’ versions from my own printer. I’ll take that as a good thing, though ;)

My friends and I (a.k.a. Team Sabby G) have plenty of strategies in the works for the future, but for one, I intend on increasing my roster of celebrity internet pets. Colonel Meow, anyone? Mreowr! Display adjustments as well, but those are all in my little personal notes… next year, we’ll see what kind of advice I’ll be able to dish out after comparing the next with this convention.

And with that, I’ll leave you all with the few shots I was able to collect throughout the three days. Enjoy and cheers! :)
